What drives up the price/makes it more expensive?

Vintage/Antique, One-of-a-kind, Hand-made, Hand-painted, Hand-dyed, etc.
Textiles such as Silk, Leather, Wool, Linen, Organic Cotton
Feather-down inserts (for comforters & pillows)
Throw pillows with details such as zippers, ribbon borders or tassel trim, embroidery
Throw pillows with same fabric on both sides, or a nice quality solid color fabric on the back (linen, silk)
Upholstered headboards with details such as nail head trim or button tufting
Nightstands with upgrades such as glass or marble top, built-in USB port

What keeps the cost down?

Mass produced
Textiles such as Polyester, Cotton, Rayon, and Polypropylene
Textiles with a lower number of stitches per square inch (ex: lower thread count)
Poly-fill inserts, a.k.a. “Down-Alternative” (for comforters & pillows)
Throw pillows are made without zippers (cover cannot be removed for washing)
Throw pillows have the primary fabric on the front and a basic solid cotton or polyester fabric on the back
No upholstery on the headboard (or basic upholstery with low cost materials); No footboard or simple footboard (primary design is on the headboard only)
Furniture made with engineered wood (plywood, MDF) with veneer
Assembly required (shipped in smaller package via courier, with all the parts separated)
Artwork is mass printed (not original paintings/drawings)
Power loomed rugs; Digital print rugs (pattern is surface printed, not woven)

PRO TIPS: Always leave some room in the budget for shipping and tax. When buying large furniture pieces, you can reduce the shipping costs by buying all your items from one or two companies (rather than buying the bed from company #1, the dressers from company #2, the night stands from company #3). Most companies offer “white glove delivery” or “in-home delivery” for larger pieces, which is typically $200-350 flat fee for all items in your order. For that fee they’ll bring the items into the bedroom, unpack them, and take away the packaging. Assembly is not included although some companies offer it for an additional fee.
If you do buy all items from one company, try to avoid buying a matching set for all furniture pieces in the bedroom. The bed should be a different design from the dressers and nightstands.
